In September 2010, P1 launched a registered charity which has as its principal objective the promotion of the conservation, protection and improvement of the marine and coastal environment. The Foundation focuses on conservation by supporting research, raising awareness of serious threats to the oceans and creating selected partnerships.

Last Sunday (September 15) at the awards ceremony for the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, the City of Sarasota presented a special proclamation to mark the 40th anniversary of the race. Mayor Liz Alpert and City Commissioner Kyle Battie (pictured above) delivered the special proclamation highlighting that over four decades the event has evolved into the longest-running powerboat race in the United States.
Also in attendance was Danielle Dwyer, Manager of Development Operations, from Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, an independent, nonprofit, marine research organization based on City Island in Sarasota, to receive a donation of $2,500 from the P1 Marine Foundation as part of its program to support marine education and conservation charities in locations where Powerboat P1 races.
The annual Grand Prix generates a significant amount of local economic impact, making it one of Sarasota’s iconic events, and receives both national and international television coverage to showcase the City and County.
Net proceeds from the race weekend benefit the P1 Marine Foundation, a non-profit formed by Powerboat P1 which focuses on conservation by raising awareness of threats to our oceans and supporting young people interested in marine conservation. The Foundation selected Mote Marine’s community-engaged STEM education program which provides hands-on marine science education for under-represented students in the sciences and under-served in the local community.
The P1 Marine Foundation will be making further donations next month when the P1 offshore race series visits St. Petersburg.
