Powerboat P1 partners with Audubon Florida to help protect birds

We are keen to support Audubon’s valuable work by spreading the word about nesting birds such as terns and skimmers struggling to survive often because of disturbance by recreational beachgoers. The estuary and coasts have special needs over the summer months that impact on bird nesting activities and the welfare of other wildlife.

Sarasota sees powerboat racing teams arriving for this weekend’s Grand Prix (June 30-July 2) and, along with its marine and coastal conservation charity P1 Marine Foundation, race promoter Powerboat P1 is joining forces with Audubon Florida to raise awareness of the need to protect beach-nesting birds throughout the summer.

Audubon Florida is dedicated to protecting birds and the habitat they need for survival, and for more than a century has encouraged people to take care of the places that make Florida special. It recruits volunteers to assist with the on-the-ground wildlife and habitat management.

Activity scheduled for this coming weekend includes filming with the Audubon team on the beach to hear first-hand how to make the beaches safer for birds. The film footage will be shown as part of P1’s live streaming of the race action over the weekend.

“It’s easy to protect beach-nesting birds,” explains Audubon Florida’s Kylie Wilson. “Give them at least 100 feet of space and avoid walking through flocks of birds. We currently have 220 skimmer chicks with more than 150 least terns nests and I observed my first chick yesterday. People should be aware that dogs are not allowed on Lido Beach in line with city ordinances.” P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala added: “We are keen to support Audubon’s valuable work by spreading the word about nesting birds such as terns and skimmers struggling to survive often because of disturbance by recreational beachgoers. Over race weekends, Powerboat P1 implements its marine animal monitoring program. This involves observers being assigned specific locations on boats, on the land and in a helicopter to monitor the race area for marine animals. The observers report sightings such as dolphins, manatees and turtles, and they have the authority to stop the racing if necessary.
